Are you a strong Development Lead? BBC Search and Navigation will be interested in working with you to lead the technology and manage a team responsible for common services and UI modules which focus on the surfacing content from around the BBC to the online audience. The Search and Navigation team within BBC Online are responsible for driving an ambitious product strategy of content discovery across all of the BBC’s content on the web. BBC Search indexes millions of documents created by the BBC’s online products and provides keyword search functionality for users on multiple editions and platforms, in multiple languages. Our global navigation experience consists of site-wide navigation and search functions that allow users to find their way through our products and we are increasingly looking to enable the use of data and customization to provide a more personalized and relevant navigation experience.

News and Knowledge (N&K) is the department within BBC Future Media responsible for the following BBC Online products: News, Sport, Weather, Knowledge & Learning, CBBC, CBeebies, BBC Homepage and Search. We manage and develop products on websites, mobile devices and interactive TV, have a world-leading approach to content management and metadata, and are delivering the London 2012 Olympics across BBC Online.

AIMS OF THE JOB

As the technical lead you will be responsible for the technology across the development stack for your products, including java web services, php/zend presentation layers, client side code, caching servers and operational monitoring. Working in an agile environment you will iterate through development and release cycles working to the Product Manager’s priorities, make technical design decisions and report into the Senior Technical Architect to ensure robust and performant solutions that are aligned to the overall BBC technical strategy. Your team’s test strategy, following TDD and BDD practices – automated and manual processes, will embed within the agile delivery methodologies managed by the Project Manager in order to release new features with the highest standards and quality assured. Leading the development team you will line manage developers and testers and other disciplines where appropriate. You will identify needs within the team and assist in organising appropriate technical training and personal development for the team members as well as lead in the recruitment of staff into vacant positions within the team when necessary. You will mentor and guide the team through best working practices and hone their technical skills and competencies. Your aim is to build and develop a world leading development team delivering world leading web applications.
